Day 4

Things have setled ino the routine toomuch time buying parts at the plumbing store, too much time waiting for a key to acces the storage depot, too much time waiting on someone who is waiting on someone, but at the end of the day. progress.  We got the roof tanks up on the roof and the plubing connected.  We will huricane proof them tomorrow by building a small block wall around them.  We got valves and lines installed for the toilets showers, and sinks.  We will not be able to install any of the fixtures until they finish the floor and build the concrete cabinets and countertops.

We made the decision tonight to purchase pait and begin painting the bedrooms.  It is surprising how light the romsare in the daytime with only daylightr through the windows.  When the wallsare painted creme and the ceilings white it should brighten everything even more.

The nurses werebusy with an overflow crowd.  Among the patients treated were Gima who had badly infected glands in his neck and Evich who managed to drive a nail into his thumb.  Both were treated and released but both report to Doctor Dave twice  day for their medications.

Day 3

Monday was a frustrating day.  Reservations had been made with Tortug Air, confirmations had ben received, and when we got the the airport, they had no record of us or our reservations and the plane was full.  The clerk said we were welcome to stay in Port au Prince another day and make reservations for Tuesday and she thought we might be able to get on a plane then.  I explained we had places to go and things to do and it did not include another night in PaP.  None of that seemed to matter.  I ended up chartering two small planes from MAF (Mission Air Force) and they took us and all of our baggage in one trip.  After arguing, (I’m sorry I meant to say negotiating) for several hours Tortug agreed to refund our money for the flight that was not avilable.

All arrived safely and the crew was busy working without us.  Unfortunately they were laying the finished floor and there was no place for us to work.  Bettter luck tomorrow!

We safely arrived in Port au Prince after an uneventful trip to Miami.  We had a minor mishap with transportation.  The vehicles that were to pick us up were stuck in traffic, which by the way is uber worse than in the past.  Jackson our long term one armed porter arranged for alternate transportation shown in the picture.  Charlotte was thrilled to ride in a tap tap.

We leave for Jeremie in the morning.

Hope Rising from the Dust

Hope for Haiti

The encouraging word from people on the ground in Haiti is that the people of Haiti are begining to rebuild their shattered lives.  Markets are begining to reappear on street corners which just proves the Haiti proverb “Where there are two or more women, there is a market.”

Haiti has a long way to go but the people are beginning to take the first fragile steps toward renewal.  I hope and pray that the work we do over the next few weeks will help restore life into Haiti and over the long term Haitians will be better off.

Last minute preparations are being made, bags are being packed, hearts are starting to pump as team members prepare for our March trips.

Hearts for Haiti has seven team members flying to Miami Port au Prince and Jeremie on March 6 and eight members departing March 13.  Our plans are to start the water treating system and train a few older kids from the orphanage in its operation.  We also plan to do the final installation of plumbing and fixtures including  five toilets, nine bathroom sinks and two kitchen sinks and concrete countertops.  If time allows, we will work on finishing the floor and hopefully moving kids into their new home.

In addition to the construction work, we have a four nurses on the team who will be busy tending the wounded through several mobile clinics.

There is definitely a sense of hope and a vision for a new Haiti.  With the continued support of the rest of the world, Haiti stands on the cusp of rebuilding their nation.

Keep the Hearts for Haiti team and the people of Haiti in your prayers as we continue the work of the Lord in this devastated land.
